A Deadly American Marriage (2025) | Netflix True-Crime Documentary Review

by PopcornDiary🍿 2025. 9. 13.

Hello, this is Popcorn Diary 🍿, where I record my thoughts on movies and series over popcorn.

After watching The Unknown Caller: The High School Catfishing Case, Netflix naturally recommended another true-crime documentary. Today, I’ll be reviewing the recently released “A Deadly American Marriage.” It’s a shocking real-life story that portrays a family torn apart by conflict and a courtroom battle clouded by ambiguity. The viewing experience constantly challenges our perspective, leaving behind a heavy sense of unease and reflection. Interestingly, I felt a familiar touch in its storytelling, only to realize it was directed by the same filmmaker.

📌 Synopsis (No Spoilers)

Netflix’s A Deadly American Marriage recounts a shocking tragedy within what seemed like an ordinary family. One day, a husband is found dead under mysterious circumstances at home. The case escalates far beyond a domestic dispute, reaching the courtroom. The wife and father-in-law stand accused, yet their defense oscillates between claims of self-defense and outright murder. Through the voices of family members, courtroom records, and media reports, the documentary edges closer to the truth — but the lingering question of “What really happened that night?” remains unanswered.

🎥 Direction & Structure

What stands out most in this documentary is its shifting perspectives. Listening to one testimony, you might find yourself convinced — only for the very next interview to dismantle that certainty. Sky Borgman skillfully juxtaposes conflicting accounts, pushing viewers to form and reform their own conclusions. Court documents, photographs, and news footage enrich the narrative, but the interpretation of these materials remains open, reminding us that facts and truth are not always synonymous. The result is more than a crime story; it is a thought-provoking meditation on the blurry line between perception and reality.

💭 Impressions

A Deadly American Marriage is not an easy watch. The collapse of trust within a family — the closest of bonds — into irreparable tragedy is profoundly unsettling. Testimonies that contradict and undermine one another only deepen the fog, leaving emotional scars on those involved and on viewers as well.

The film never dictates who is right or wrong. Instead, it provides multiple fragments and entrusts us with the judgment. That is precisely its strength. It reminds us of how quickly we can lean toward one side, and how easily our opinions can shift when another angle emerges. This experience elevates the film beyond a mere recounting of crime — it becomes a reflection on truth, memory, and human bias.

On a personal note, I did find myself instinctively leaning toward one side, though I won’t spell it out here. What remains clear is how lies seem to spiral into more lies, and how brazenness often sustains them. This layered narrative makes the documentary gripping, thought-provoking, and deeply unsettling.
