Stranger Things Season 3 Review | Netflix’s 80s Retro Sci-Fi Thriller

by PopcornDiary🍿 2025. 9. 5.

Hello! This is Popcorn Diary 🍿, where I share my thoughts on movies and series.

Today, I’ll be revisiting Stranger Things Season 3, one of Netflix’s flagship series. I jumped right into Season 3 after finishing Seasons 1 and 2, and was impressed by the expanded storyline and the refreshing summer atmosphere.

📌 Synopsis (No Spoilers)

The summer of 1985 in Hawkins is full of excitement with the grand opening of the Starcourt Mall. El and Mike are completely absorbed in their first love, while Hopper—now acting as El’s father—grows increasingly frustrated. Max and Lucas spend their summer in a sweet yet quarrelsome romance.

But beneath the joyful days, darkness returns. The Russians are secretly conducting portal experiments, and the Mind Flayer, once thought sealed away, finds a new path back. Evolving into a more terrifying form, the creature begins using humans as hosts, spreading fear and chaos across Hawkins.

  • El & Mike: The sweetness of first love mixed with teenage conflicts creates relatable drama.
  • Max & El: From rivals to true friends, they become each other’s strongest support.
  • Steve & Dustin: Their hilarious “bromance” delivers some of the best chemistry of the season.
  • New Faces: Robin, Billy, and Erica step into bigger roles, enriching the storyline.

The characters’ arcs highlight growth and emotional depth, shining more vividly than in the previous seasons.

🔍 Highlights & Viewing Points

🏬 Starcourt Mall: A perfectly recreated 1980s retro setting that feels like a character itself.
🧪 Russian Lab & Codebreaking: Adds a spy-thriller vibe that heightens tension.
🧟 The New Monster: Possessing humans makes the threat scarier than ever.
💔 The Ending: Emotional sacrifices and an unforgettable finale set the stage for Season 4.

🤔 Thoughts & Impressions

Season 3 delivers larger scale and faster pacing, while still capturing the charm of a coming-of-age story. The summer setting brightens the tone before plunging back into suspense in the second half. After a two-year gap since Season 2, this season feels meticulously crafted and tightly written.

I found it more immersive than Season 2, while still carrying the freshness of Season 1 in a new direction. Most of all, the characters’ growth gave the season depth beyond being just a monster story. The finale blends friendship, family, and love in a way that leaves a lasting impact—don’t miss the post-credit scene!
