Hello, this is Popcorn Diary🍿, where I share my thoughts while munching on popcorn.
Today’s post is about Netflix’s brand-new Korean series Aema, released on August 22nd.
This six-episode series drew attention even before its premiere thanks to its bold casting, 1980s backdrop in Korea, and daring teasers. After finishing it, here’s my honest take.

🎬 Story (no heavy spoilers)
In the early 1980s, top actress Jung Hee-ran (Lee Ha-nee) receives the script for an erotic film titled "Madame Aema." She refuses, criticizing it for being only about nudity. Angered, film producer Gu Jung-ho (Jin Seon-kyu) demotes her to a supporting role and casts rookie actress Shin Joo-ae (Bang Hyo-rin) as the lead, pushing her into explicit performances.
Dragged into high-society gatherings, Joo-ae faces shocking realities, while director Gwak In-woo(Jo Hyun-chul) reluctantly alters his film under political and financial pressure. The movie becomes a hit, but leaves bitterness behind. Meanwhile, Hee-ran prepares a fiery expose that will turn the tables. (I’ll stop here to avoid major spoilers!)

👥 Main Cast & Characters
- Lee Ha-nee as Jung Hee-ran
The undeniable lead of the series. Charismatic, bold, and unapologetically glamorous. Fun fact: Lee recently gave birth, but filming had wrapped back in 2024. - Bang Hyo-rin as Shin Joo-ae
A fresh face, perfectly fitting the rookie actress role. Ordinary yet striking, she delivered one of the most relatable performances. - Jin Seon-kyu as Gu Jung-ho
Usually known for kind-hearted actor, he fully transforms into a sleazy, power-hungry producer here. Possibly the character that best represents the corrupt 70s–80s Korean film industry.

💡 Review Highlights
- Mature Content & Rating
As a 19+ drama, it does touch on nudity and erotic themes. While not overly graphic visually, the recreated audio from 1980s erotic films is explicit enough that it’s best watched alone—not with parents or family. - Tone & Genre
Marketed as a comedy, but it felt closer to a serious drama. It shows censorship, government pressure, and industry exploitation, which at times felt suffocating. Still, the lead actresses’ fiery fightbacks provided a refreshing “catharsis.” - Relevance Today
The show cleverly mirrors real industry struggles. Actors, filmmakers, or cinephiles familiar with film history might find it especially resonant.
🍿 Popcorn Diary Verdict
A drama best enjoyed solo, in full focus. Strong performances kept it sharp, never dull, and the period setting was convincingly done. and last but not least, the actress Lee, Hanee is so beautiful!
